Grayling Fly Fishing

man holding fish

Grayling fly fishing is sometimes overlooked, but it can be one of the most rewarding and exhilarating forms of winter sport. Often known as the “Lady of the River”, grayling are prized for their elegance, speed and distinctive challenge on the fly.

Lower Itchen Fishery offers excellent grayling fly fishing during the winter months, from 11 October to 31 January. Over the years, around one in ten grayling has weighed more than 2 lbs, with the best recorded fish reaching 3 lb 1 oz.

Competition Heritage

The fishery is proud to have hosted the Federation of English Fly Fishers South East Region for more than 20 years, as well as the Southern Region from 2001 for a number of years.  Both have held their Regional Rivers Eliminator matches on the water, with winners progressing to the National Rivers Final, from which the England Fly Fishing team is selected.

Current and former world-champion fly fishers are often seen fishing the water during the winter months, reflecting the quality and reputation of the grayling sport available at Lower Itchen Fishery.

The most fantastic day out I have experienced for grayling fishing with the fly on a chalkstream. You can almost guarantee to catch, no matter what the weather.

The fishing is superb. I have had two fish over 3lbs and there are not many places you can do that!
